The Canadian Team Cleared of American Allegations of Rigging Bobsleigh Qualifying Race

Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of charges that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, thereby denying competitors from other nations a chance to secure their place.

The Core Allegation and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the team from Canada of pulling four of its six competitors from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this reduced the field, making a lower points pool available. Despite winning the event, the American athlete did not secure her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations permit National Federations to withdraw athletes from competition at any time,” declared the governing body.

After reviewing the matter, the IBSF stated it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its code.

Canada's Explanation

In response, the Canadian federation stood by the withdrawals, pointing to athlete welfare and the need for rest. They asserted that the individuals pulled had competed extensively that week and the move was “appropriate, clear and aligned with both athlete welfare and the sport's fairness.”

Coaches from the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “serious concerns” about the selection system's integrity.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the 2026 Olympics represent her last Games. While she can still qualify, the likely US team spots are expected to go to Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose best Games result was fourth place in Sochi 2014.

A Contentious Sporting Climate

The controversy comes during a time of increased rivalry in athletic competitions involving Canada and the US. Statements from political figures and trade disputes have added to a intense competitive atmosphere. Recent memorable clashes include heated ice hockey matches and a thrilling World Series featuring clubs in the two countries.
