Explosion Costs 3 Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
Event Timeline
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was located not long after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area revealed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
