Big 12 Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Comments Following CFP Snub as ‘Totally Out of Bounds’

During a public statement, Big 12 chief asserted that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for public comments targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

Notre Dame maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. Bevacqua has contended that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s chances to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to campaigning for the inclusion of the University of Miami.

“They do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we bring tremendous football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to undermine us in this procedure,” Bevacqua said.

Miami ultimately secured the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the direct meeting between the two programs. Bevacqua additionally stated that the ACC engaged in a targeted social media effort over several weeks indicating its support for Miami.

A Strong Response

Subsequently on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner addressed the allegations at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“My opinion is that his behavior has been egregious,” the commissioner commented. “He is totally out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

This public criticism is particularly notable given Bevacqua’s special standing. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the interests of independent Notre Dame.

Historical Context and Future Moves

The commissioner further remarked the lifeline the ACC provided Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a complete conference schedule and a berth in its championship game.

“His behavior has been unacceptable,” he reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable going after Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had circulated about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. Yet, the commissioner's strong comments on Tuesday appear to make such a partnership less likely in the near term.

The Irish, who made the CFP championship game last season, have stated they are declining a bowl game after failing to qualify this year.
